My backyard is of course one of my favorite subjects to paint as well as a great place to spend time. Here I plant myself firmly in that location.

LIVING SHADOWS OF THE PRAIRIE OASIS

Acrylic on plywood - 5x7" - (C)BruceDocker,2008
$100.00

During the heat of the day, cattle gather together in ponds and under hedge rows to stay cool. Though you don't think of cows as being camouflaged, they do tend to disappear into the dark shadows. Their individuality blurs into a larger unified mass that gives bulk to the shadow.

It's kind of humorous how wary cows can be. Cars drive by all day long, then one stops and they get all nervous.

I was driving through a rural area of northeastern Kansas, south of Kansas City. The fields were planted right up to the edge of the road. It seemed the plants might grow out onto the blacktop and converge in the middle.

I don't know why, but there were no lower branches on these trees. Very unusual. Perhaps this painting belongs in my series "The Fable of the Walking Trees".

The Flint Hills are one of those unexpected parts of the landscape, in what is traditionally thought of a just a flat part of the country, rural Kansas. The Flint Hills are short rolling and choppy hills of tall prairie grass with natural rows of short weathered trees growing predominately in the shallow valleys. The view is generally uninterrupted to the horizon by man made objects. This gives a view of the sky that rivals that of Wyoming's big sky country. Towering thunderheads can make a person standing alone, looking up, feel intimidated, as well as in awe at the size of the clouds.

Like many natural areas, the Flint Hills are in danger of disappearing as we know them. Click here for more information.

STRANGE PEOPLE after EMIL NOLDE

Acrylic on canvas - 28x36" (C)BruceDocker2009
NFS

This is a painting I completed in 1978. At that time I painted several large paintings for a show in Topeka, KS. Unfortunately, I have no records of that show and this is the only large painting that I still have from that time. I don't recall if the others still still exist or where they are!? I do remember one was of Captain Ahab and was about 48x36".
